A Study on Perceived Family Support and the Psychiatric Health in the Elderly


Abstract
We conducted this study to prepare basic data for the geriatric psychiatric nursing in order to improve mental health state of the aged. Subjects were selected by random sampling procedure and a total of 108 the aged were interviewed. The mental health scale(3-point linker scale questionnaire developed by H.S. Kang) and the family support scale(3-point linker scale questionnaire developed by H.S. Kang) were administered to this group. Data were analyzed by the SAS computerized program.
The results of this study are as follow
1) The total mean score of mental health state of the aged was 39.63 and standard deviation was 6.67. The perceived family support of the aged showed the result of mean 34.90 and standard 5.59.
2) There were significant correlation according to education(p <.05), presence -or absence of spouse(p<.05), monthly pocket money(p<.05), and economic state(p<.05) iii the mental health state in the relationship of mental health state and perceived family support according to general characteristics of the aged. Also, in the perceived family support, there were significant correlation according to age(p<.01), monthly pocket money(p<.05), pattern of family(p<.05), economic state(p<.01), and typee of supporter(p<.01).
3) There were significant correlation in the relationship between mental health state and perceived family support of the aged(r=0.455343, p<.001).
